An early morning fire ripped through a Bangkok pub, killing at least 27 people and injuring several others. The disaster has renewed scrutiny of Thailand's nightlife safety as officials investigate a possible electrical fault.
At least 27 people were killed and several others were injured after a major fire broke out at a pub in Bangkok early Monday, officials said. Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said those injured had been taken to hospital and the cause of the fire was being investigated.
The blaze engulfed the Na Ladprao pub in the northern part of the Thai capital. Rescuers said the fire was reported around midnight, and firefighters took about half an hour to bring it under control.
Footage shared online by first responders showed a huge fire raging as smoke poured out of the pub’s front door. Thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky as people tried to flee the building.
Anutin said a musician performing at the pub told him he saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage before the power went out. An explosion was then heard, and thick smoke quickly filled the venue, he added.
Many of the victims were found in the restrooms at the back of the pub, Anutin said. Photos taken after the fire showed charred tables and chairs and heavy damage inside the premises.
Thailand has seen similar incidents in the past. In 2022, 14 people were killed in a fire at a music pub in the eastern part of the country. More than a decade earlier, 66 people were killed and over 200 were injured in a fire during a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok on January 1, 2009. That blaze was apparently caused by an indoor fireworks display.
The Bangkok pub fire is among the deadliest such incidents in Thailand in recent years, leaving at least 27 dead, several injured and raising fresh questions as authorities investigate how the blaze began.
