Ten people were killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, with musicians and a DJ among the dead, the Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union said on Saturday, a day after the incident. The crash took place in North Andros, west of Nassau, and led the government to temporarily ground Flamingo Air flights.
Officials said the plane had taken off from Lynden Pindling Airport in Nassau and was headed to San Andros when it crashed. The suspension of Flamingo Air's air operator certificate was described by the government as a precautionary safety step while the cause of the crash is investigated.
In a statement posted on X, the Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union said, "Among the dearly departed are some of the talented and vibrant members of our entertainment community, including members of The Pond Band and a DJ." It added, "(Their) passion, dedication, and artistry touched so many lives and helped to enrich the cultural fabric of The Bahamas."
According to the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority, the aircraft crashed after departing Nassau for San Andros.
The Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation said the suspension of Flamingo Air's certificate followed two safety incidents on Friday. At a press conference, Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis said the first incident involved a Flamingo Air plane flying to Mayaguana. She said the pilot reported a concern and turned back to Nassau. After the aircraft landed and passengers got off, it caught fire. That incident is also under investigation, she said.
The crash in North Andros killed 10 people, including members of the Bahamas entertainment community, and prompted the temporary grounding of Flamingo Air as officials investigate both Friday incidents.
