In the run-up to his dramatic resignation, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s engagements with key opposition figures, particularly on the first day of Parliament session, have sparked intense political curiosity. His interactions with at least three senior opposition MPs are now being closely scrutinised, with each playing a unique role in the unfolding developments that led to his exit.
On the morning of July 21, Dhankhar was seen departing Parliament in his official vehicle, accompanied by a Congress Rajya Sabha MP. The two headed to his official residence, and later in the day, the same MP openly acknowledged having several conversations with the Vice President throughout the day.
By around 4 PM, this MP reportedly handed over the signed impeachment motion from the Opposition directly to Dhankhar. What had started with just a few signatories had by then swelled to over 60 MPs from multiple parties. The MP also posted about his engagement with Dhankhar on social media later that evening, making his involvement public.
Meanwhile, another opposition MP was reportedly in continuous contact with the Vice President — offering advice and acting as an informal conduit between him and senior opposition leaders, say sources. This individual, sources claim, played a role in shaping the opposition’s perception of Dhankhar’s intentions.
Adding to this web of interactions, a third MP, known for his legal acumen, was also closely involved. According to sources, he pushed Dhankhar to de-prioritise the Justice Yashwant Varma case and instead focus on Justice Shekhar Yadav, who is accused of making inflammatory remarks. The MP reportedly assured Dhankhar of robust support from legal circles should he pursue the matter.
These behind-the-scenes interactions, though not publicly confirmed by Dhankhar, appear to have contributed significantly to the pressure and political complexity that culminated in his resignation.
