Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stressed that the future of Bangladesh’s democracy depends on a swift and genuine return to constitutional governance, driven by free, fair, and inclusive elections.
Speaking exclusively with CNN-News18’s Manoj Gupta, Hasina emphasised that her party, the Awami League, is not defined by any single individual or family but is deeply “ingrained in the fabric of Bangladesh" and represents a vital voice for the country’s democratic politics.
The former PM issued a pointed appeal to India, asking the neighbouring nation to maintain pressure on the current interim Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus. She urged India to “persist in their calls for Yunus to enable free, fair, and inclusive elections and not to disenfranchise millions of his own people".
Hasina argued that excluding the Awami League, a party elected numerous times and supported by millions, undermines the entire democratic exercise.
“The only way to restore good health to Bangladesh’s political system is by enabling a government to be elected and genuinely rule by the consent of the people. That is the best way to future-proof our country against regime degradation," Hasina stated.
Her statement positions the call for an inclusive, constitutional election as the necessary path to long-term stability and political integrity in Bangladesh.
