At least eight people have been injured after gunshots were reported from Sydney’s Bondi Beach during a crowded Hanukkah celebration on Sunday. A major police operation is currently underway, with authorities detaining two people in connection with the incident. New South Wales Police confirmed the arrests, saying the security operation remains active and urging people to avoid the area, reported Reuters.

In a statement posted on X, NSW Police said: “The police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area… Anyone at the scene should take shelter."

The Sydney Morning Herald reported multiple gunshots were heard, though it remains unclear if anyone was hit. Videos circulating on X appeared to show beachgoers fleeing as gunfire and police sirens rang out, though Reuters said it could not immediately verify the footage.

Local media reports earlier indicated that at least 50 shots were fired during a Hanukkah parade attended by more than 1,000 people. A member of the Jewish community told The Jerusalem Post the shooting unfolded at a Hanukkah party being held near the beach.

A spokesperson for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government was monitoring the situation closely. “We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi. We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police," the spokesperson said.

According to reports, emergency services are active at the scene, and officials are expected to release further details as the investigation develops.
