Some parliamentarians criticised the timing of the event, given the escalating Middle East crisis following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The event was reportedly held on Thursday to promote the benefits of dance for the nation’s health and wellbeing.
Outrage has erupted after more than 40 British MPs were filmed dancing at Parliament during an event with Strictly Come Dancing stars. The video of the session has gained widespread attention on social media.
According to UK media, the event was held on Thursday to promote the benefits of dance for the nation’s health and wellbeing.
The video shows MPs stepping and twirling under the glass atrium of Portcullis House, following choreography by Kai Widdrington.
Among the participants were Green Party MP Hannah Spencer, shadow culture secretary Nigel Huddleston, Conservative MP Caroline Nokes, and Labour’s Kim Leadbeater, who practised alongside former Strictly contestant Kingston, professional dancers Flavia Cacace and Neil Jones, and ex-judge Dame Arlene Phillips.
Some parliamentarians criticised the timing of the event, given the escalating Middle East crisis following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. In a post on X, Your Party MP Zarah Sultana wrote, “The optics of MPs doing Strictly Come Dancing in Parliament while the world teeters on the brink of World War Three is completely inappropriate. It says all you need to know about Westminster."

Reform UK’s Nadhim Zahawi, a former Tory minister, called the event “a very bad look for Parliament when the Middle East is trying to free itself from a terrorist regime hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons that could put the United Kingdom at risk."
Social media users also expressed outrage, criticising MPs for dancing while global crises unfold. Many argued that the event showed a startling disconnect from the seriousness of world affairs.
One user wrote, “We have a global emergency … yet some of our MPs are f******* ballroom dancing." Another commented, “The state of the country reflects the extremely low calibre of many of our elected representatives. Every one of these idiots is unfit for public office."
Others highlighted broader concerns about governance, with one posting, “Never mind Chinese spies, absence of a navy, WW3, giving away our territory (& taxes), invaders arriving today, electoral fraud, paedo protection, rape gangs. Stunned our elected, tax payer funded political self annointed elite think this is ok today. Gross lack of insight."
Another social media user remarked, “This gives me so much confidence in the British government."
