Aam Party Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Thursday alleged that he has been placed under house arrest in Srinagar ahead of his protest against the arrest of party MLA Doda Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act.
Singh was staying at a government guest house, which he said has been turned into “police cantonment". The Rajya Sabha MP posted videos on X in which he can be seen trying to open the gates.
“Dictatorship is at its peak. I am in Srinagar at this moment. Raising one’s voice for rights and protesting in a democracy is our constitutional right. Today, there was a press conference and sit-in in Srinagar against the illegal arrest of Mehraj Malik, but the government guest house has been turned into a police camp. I am not being allowed to leave the guest house with Imran Hussaain and companions," Singh posted on X.

Conference chief and former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah, who arrived at the guest house to meet Singh, said that he will raise the issue with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
“I regret that such actions are taking place. Everyone has the freedom to express themselves. Sanjay Singh had come here from Delhi in solidarity with his MLA, who was arrested. What pains me is that when I went only to meet him to ask how he was, not to make any political statement, he was kept locked inside the guest house. I will request the Lieutenant Governor that people’s rights should be respected and work must remain within those limits," Sinha said.
On September 8, Mehraj Malik was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly disturbing public order in Doda district. This is the first time a sitting MLA has been held under the stringent PSA that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years, drawing condemnation from several political parties.
The 37-year-old AAP legislator from Doda and chief of the party’s J-K unit was initially detained by police on Monday morning at Dak Bungalow as he prepared to visit flood-affected areas of his constituency.
