At least 30 people were killed, and dozens were injured after a suspected suicide blast took place at a religious centre in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

According to the local reports, an explosion rocked the Tarlai Imambargah, a Shiite mosque in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital. The attack occurred during the two-day official visit of Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Police teams and rescue workers rushed to the spot and began relief operations. Pakistani newspaper Dawn had earlier reported that at least 80 people were injured in the blast.

Hospital authorities declared an emergency following the explosion. The injured were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and the Polyclinic Hospital for treatment.

Several videos circulating online show scenes of chaos at the site, with people seen running in panic. Officials present at the spot were also seen trying to control the situation and assist the injured. Islamabad Capital Territory Police Spokesperson Taqi Jawad said it was too soon to ascertain the nature of the blast and forensics teams would need to determine whether it was a suicide or a planted bomb.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, and asked authorities to ensure the provision of best medical care to the wounded persons, who were arriving at the city’s different hospitals.
