Three police officers were killed and two more were critically injured after a shooting took place in rural central Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon. The suspect has been killed after being shot by police, and the condition of the injured officers remain stable.
The shooting came amid an ongoing investigation of charges of stalking and criminal trespass against the suspect. The officers were headed to arrest him when the shooting unfolded, reported CNN, citing law enforcement sources.
“They were there to follow up on an investigation that began yesterday," Reuters quoted state police commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris as saying.
Governor Josh Shapiro also visited the hospital and shared condolences on the demise of the officers.
“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania," he said.
He asked for prayers for the families of the victims.
“It’s important for you to know that these families who are grieving right now … how proud they are of their loved ones who put on the uniform to keep us safe," he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the law enforcement officials while informing about the incident.
“It’s an extraordinary thing what these law enforcement families do. They support the individual who puts on the uniform and runs toward danger," Shapiro said in a news conference Wednesday, according to CNN.
“They’re there for them when they leave in the morning, and they pray throughout the day that they will come home at night," he said.
