At least two people were killed, while several others were injured in a shooting incident during a funeral in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Wednesday evening (local Utah time), according to police and multiple media reports.

The incident happened at a parking lot outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse.

According to BNO News, Salt Lake City police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at around 7.36 pm local time at the church located near 650 North Redwood Road, close to the Salt Lake City Airport.

The shooting occurred during a funeral service and followed an altercation in the chapel’s parking lot, police said.

Police spokesperson Glen Mills was quoted as saying that there were at least eight victims in the incident.

“We know there are at least eight victims," Mills said.

“Two of them have died, three of them are in critical condition, and three others are in unknown condition."

Authorities have not released the ages or identities of the victims.

According to Mills, some of the injured were transported to hospitals in private vehicles before officers arrived at the scene.

Local media outlet KUTV reported that the suspect was not in custody as of late Wednesday.

Reuters, citing an ABC News affiliate, also reported that at least one suspect fled the scene following the shooting.

Police said the suspects escaped in a vehicle that was last seen heading north on Redwood Road, and a manhunt has been launched.

Mills said investigators are examining whether the shooting may be gang-related, though no motive has been officially confirmed.

Associated Press, citing local media, confirmed that the shooting took place outside a church building and that a funeral was being held inside at the time of the incident.

Commenting on the incident, the Salt Lake City Police Department said the suspects were on the run.

The police also said that the Redwood Road was closed in both directions from 500 N to 700 N.

Social media reports claimed that as many as nine people were shot and suggested that some individuals had been detained, though officials have not confirmed those details or clarified whether any detentions were related to the shooting.

Meanwhile, the FBI’s Salt Lake City office said it was aware of the incident and was offering assistance to local law enforcement agencies.
