A fatal shooting took place early Friday at a student housing complex on the University of New Mexico’s main campus in Albuquerque, leaving one person dead and another injured. The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus, prompting a shelter-in-place order and the temporary closure of the university.

Campus police responded to reports of gunfire at the Casas del Rio residence hall around 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found two individuals with gunshot wounds. One individual was fatally wounded, and the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The university issued an alert urging all students and staff to remain indoors, and the central campus was shut down as multiple law enforcement agencies began searching the area. A follow-up alert was posted around 6 a.m. as the investigation continued.

Authorities have not released information on the victims’ identities or provided a description of the suspect. Casas del Rio, which houses over 1,000 students in suite-style apartments, was cordoned off with yellow tape as the search and investigation progressed.

The incident comes as new students were arriving on campus for orientation ahead of the fall semester, which begins in about three weeks. Few people were seen on campus by midday as the lockdown remained in effect.
