Recently-elected South Korean President Lee Jae Myung hosted Xi Jinping for their first meeting on Saturday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. On the last day of the summit, the Chinese President visited South Korea after more than a decade.
Lee hosted Xi at a state summit and dinner after an Asia-Pacific leaders’ forum in the South Korean city of Gyeongju.
During the talks, Lee sought Jinping’s help in efforts to resume talks with nuclear-armed neighbour North Korea.
As per a report by Reuters, South Korea’s President referred to recent high-level exchanges between China and North Korea and said, “I am very positive about the situation in which conditions for engagement with North Korea are being formed."
“I also hope that South Korea and China will take advantage of these favourable conditions to strengthen strategic communication to resume dialogue with North Korea," he added.
Lee presented Chinese leader Xi Jinping with “the finest" wooden board for the ancient strategy game Go during the visit. He also vowed to improve ties with China, South Korea’s biggest trading partner.
Xi described China and South Korea as “important neighbours that cannot be moved and also partners that cannot be separated".
As per the reports, South Korea, a US ally, also called for a phased approach to denuclearising North Korea. However, North Korea, a military and economic ally of China, dismissed the denuclearisation agenda as an unrealisable “pipe dream".
Pyongyang repeatedly and explicitly rejected Lee’s reconciliation efforts. North Korea’s Leader Kim Jong Un said he would be willing to talk to the United States if Washington drops demands for denuclearisation.
