The Pakistan government has allowed Dr Uzma Khanum, one of former prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters, to meet him in jail, the country’s top establishment sources told News18.
According to the top Pakistan establishment sources, Uzma Khanum is being allowed because she is a medical doctor. This comes amid heightened international scrutiny and national security concerns over Imran Khan’s “custodial secrecy".
The sources said the authorities are now taking into consideration growing scrutiny, human rights queries, and significant international attention concerning Khan’s detention in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Top Indian intelligence sources indicated that Islamabad is seeking to project a “selective humanitarian gesture", particularly before anticipated parliamentary decisions. There has been sustained pressure from the Khans and their legal teams, who have been campaigning against his alleged near-isolation, harsh treatment, and denial of regular access to loved ones.
The intelligence sources said his other sisters are still unlikely to be cleared due to security and sensitivity reasons. If Dr Uzma Khan is permitted entry, the meeting will be brief, heavily supervised, and strictly without phones, they said.
They said officials are determined to prevent any immediate public disclosures about the former PM’s physical and mental condition. Security agencies are concerned that if all sisters are allowed to meet him, revelations about his condition may trigger a public reaction on the streets, they added.
Intelligence reports suggest the Pakistan government is “acting out of fear" due to “rising anger over Imran Khan’s alleged torture and isolation inside jail". Authorities are particularly worried that this public dissent could escalate into a political as well as a law and order situation in key regions, specifically Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
This also comes a day after his other sister, Aleema Khan, escalated charges against the Pakistani government, accusing it of a “pre-planned political vendetta" against her family and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Aleema alleged that authorities are weaponising state institutions to silence the Khans and the PTI, describing the persecution as extending into the financial realm through “economic strangulation". She said her bank accounts were closed “without any verdict", judicial direction, notice, or due process.
She warned that these measures are part of a “broader crackdown aimed at crippling PTI leadership". Her charges followed her recent, high-profile sit-in outside Adiala Jail, which she eventually called off after police assured that meetings with the former PM would be arranged.
