US President Donald Trump appeared to close his eyes several times during his ninth Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, prompting fresh questions about his alertness during a session that ran for more than two hours.
Across the meeting, the 79-year-old President shifted between leaning back in his chair, slouching forward, twiddling his thumbs, and sitting completely still with his eyes shut. The moments were brief but noticeable, according to reporters in the room.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio was the final speaker and used his remarks to praise what he called Trump’s “transformational" foreign policy. As Rubio spoke, Trump sat beside him with his eyes closed and his shoulders dropped, before suddenly sitting upright midway through the comments.
Later, when Rubio made a light joke about the college football playoff season, Cabinet members broke into loud laughter. Trump showed only a minor reaction, his lips tightening slightly as his eyes flickered open.
The White House has not commented on the footage, which circulated widely after the meeting ended.
Trump is the oldest person ever to have assumed the US presidency and the job has clearly weighed on him since starting a second term in January.
While the White House public relations machine continues to portray Trump as improbably virile — creating AI-generated pictures of him as muscle-bound superheroes and warriors — the Republican is visibly slowing down.
The report in the influential Times noted that Trump has sharply reduced his public events and domestic travel, compared to his first term, and generally runs a public schedule between the hours of noon and 5:00 pm.
During one televised event in the Oval Office last month, Trump appeared to fall asleep briefly.
