Bhojpuri superstar Shatrughan Yadav, alias Khesari Lal Yadav, seems to be heading towards a defeat in the Chapra constituency in Bihar as counting of votes progresses in the Assembly elections on Friday. At 1pm, Yadav, an RJD candidate, was trailing from the Chapra seat, while BJP candidate Chhoti Kumari was leading the race.

Khesari Lal Yadav, one of the best-known singers and actors in the most popular dialect of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, had joined the Tejashwi Yadav-led RJD in October. Yadav had joined the party along with wife Chanda, a homemaker. A day later, Yadav was fielded from the from the Chapra assembly seat in Bihar’s Saran district.

The Chhapra Assembly seat has long been a BJP stronghold. In the 2020 election, the party’s Dr. C.N. Gupta defeated the RJD’s Randhir Kumar Singh by a narrow margin of about 6,771 votes. Yadav, Rajput, Brahmin, Bania, and Muslim voters typically play a decisive role in this constituency.

This time, the RJD hoped that Khesari Lal Yadav’s large fan base would help it capture the seat, which has a history of tight contests. But BJP candidate Chhoti Kumari’s experience as a former Zila Parishad president appears to have successfully countered Yadav’s star appeal.

The BJP-led NDA appeared headed for a landslide in Bihar, leading in over 180 of the state’s 243 seats and putting the BJP on course for its strongest-ever tally. By noon, Election Commission trends showed the BJP ahead in more than 80 of the 101 seats it contested, reinforcing its position as the country’s dominant political force after recent wins in Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) also looked set for a major revival, leading in over 70 seats compared to 43 in 2020. Chirag Paswan’s LJP(RV) delivered a standout performance too, leading in more than 20 of 29 seats. In contrast, the RJD was ahead in fewer than 40 of the 140+ seats it contested, while the Congress led in under 10.
